Two northern Saskatchewan First Nations and a Metis local are being given provincial funding to begin mapping of their traditional territories.
The government says it is a necessary part of the duty-to-consult process so that governments and industry know who to talk to when development is being planned.
The Big Island Lake Cree Nation is receiving $250,000, while the Cumberland House Cree Nation and a nearby Metis local will get $172,000 to work collaboratively — believed to be a first in the province.
The Cumberland House mapping project is expected to take over a year to complete, while the Big Island Lake initiative will take 14 months.
