Monday, November 23, 2009 at 13:15
A preliminary hearing has begun in Prince Albert for a 19-year-old man accused of killing a member of the Montreal Lake Cree Nation.
Cody Halkett was charged with second-degree murder after the body of a 16-year-old girl was discovered on 16th Street West in Prince Albert on May 4.
Police haven’t disclosed how the victim died, only that it was suspicious.
Cody Halkett sat behind a glass wall this morning as lawyers for the prosecution and defence began arguing his case before Judge Hugh Harradence.
Members of the girl’s family were present for the proceedings.
The hearing is expected to last two weeks.
The judge will then decide whether or not there is enough evidence to order a trial.
