Questions about how development can proceed in Saskatchewan’s far north will be raised this week at a conference in Fond du Lac.
The Athabasca Territorial Government is holding a land and resource conference starting today and running through to the end of the week.
Darrell McDonald, CEO for the Fond du Lac Denesuline Nation, explains that the Athabasca Basin communities are seeking clarity on development, so that they can nail down what hurdles need to be cleared before projects proceed.
“Basically knowing who to contact, and various departments — as we know, governments are red-taped, and the bureaucracy, we could end up in silos and not getting anywhere. And this is where the frustration lies, is not knowing who are the decision-makers,” McDonald says.
He says the conference is open to anyone, and several major employers like Cameco have been invited to attend.
