A deal signed yesterday is designed to improve the job prospects for First Nations and Metis students in the Battlefords area.
Representatives of 12 groups signed an Aboriginal Employment Partnership Agreement.
The goal of the agreement is to enable First Nations and Metis people to get education and training they need for good jobs.
Some of the groups have signed agreements with the provincial government in the past, but this is the first time they’ve all agreed to work together.
Yesterday also marked the first time Sakewew High School had signed the agreement.
The Battlefords Chamber of Commerce was one of the signatories.
Chamber president Kelley Bahrey says the agreement is a great way to fill a need in the Battlefords workforce.
“We’ve got opportunities, and then we’ve got the First Nations and Metis people that are trained and educated for the opportunities. If we can find a way to meld those two together, we’re headed in the right direction, definitely,” Bahrey says.
Other signatories included Saskatchewan’s Ministry of First Nations and Metis Relations and the federal Department of Indian Affairs.
