Embattled Mill Community To Form Taskforce

The Big River Forestry Taskforce has decided to form a non-profit organization to get its mill running.

The organization will apply for $150,000 from the province, which will be used to come up with an action plan to stimulate the local economy.

The group will also apply for the 200,000 cubic metres of wood per year that the government has set aside for additional business proposals.

The province said it would set that wood aside for Big River.

That’s far below the 800,000 cubic meters EACOM president Rick Doman wants for the mill.

But taskforce chairman and Big River mayor Brian Brownfield says it’s a start, and he doesn’t think the province will provide more anyway.

Brownfield predicts work on the action plan will begin in January.

He expects it to be completed in about six weeks.
