Elections Agency To Address Voter ID Concerns

Elections Canada is responding to concerns raised over new identification requirements for voters in federal elections.

The agency carried out a survey last year to address potential problems found in areas around the 60th parallel, including the northern Saskatchewan riding of Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River.

It says it has determined clearer explanations need to be been given to voters about what sorts of ID can be accepted by polling clerks.

It also found that information on how to attain those credentials was not fully understood.

Some of the recommendations to come out of the work include using clearer language on signs, making changes to the website, and using more mobile polls.

Elections Canada has also added more types of ID that will work at polling stations, including trappers’ licenses.
