La Ronge is one of 10 communities across the country that is running the RCMP’s Aboriginal Shield Program this year.

Created by the RCMP’s Drug and Organized Crime Awareness Service, the ASP is designed to educate Aboriginal students about healthy lifestyle alternatives to drugs, alcohol abuse and gangs.

La Ronge is the only community in Saskatchewan that is hosting the program.

Cst. Maureen Greyeyes Brant, the ASP’s national coordinator, says that while it has been changed a bit this year to better connect with Aboriginal cultures, the program has been around since 1992.

Students began the program this month.
