An instructor at a reserve school near Prince Albert says some traditional teachings there are starting to pay off.

Myrna Turner is the target behaviour teacher at Muskoday First Nation Community School.

Launched back in 2005, the school incorporates a variety of holistic approaches to reducing negative behaviour.

Turner says much of it is based on the theory that all behaviour is purposeful — that everyone behaves in a certain way to get the basic needs they require.

She says when a child acts up, the first thing they do is ask him or her what they are doing and what they want.

Once the student answers those questions, Turner says they can then begin to think of ways of acting differently.

Turner says the approach was created at the school after they looked around to see what worked and what didn’t.

She adds they also teach their students to connect many of their needs to the medicine wheel.

On Friday, the school was asked to showcase these approachs to government officials and other visitors.
