Nanatakapo Prepared To Give Mediation Another Try

A northern Saskatchewan man says he wants government officials to be at his next mediation session over a conviction of carelessly using a firearm.

Victor Nanatakapo says he wants to ask them what title they think they hold over the land his family lives on.

Earlier this year, Nanatakapo was convicted of shooting a rifle near some boaters that were on Delaronde Lake near his house.

He told the judge he fired the gun to scare them away.

Nanatakapo also said that tourists had ran over his nets and disturbed a nearby burial site for years.

The judge gave Nanatakapo a conditional sentence, but told him to try and meet with local residents to explain his actions.

Nanatakapo says he’s still willing to do that, but he wants officials from the province and municipality to be there, as well.

A meeting between the two sides was scheduled for Friday, but Nanatakapo says there were problems with how it was set up.

The Crown prosecutor’s office says if the probation officer handling the case doesn’t feel Nanatakapo is living up to the terms of the judge’s instructions, he could be charged with breaching the court order.
