North Exempt From Sale Of Wildlife Habitat

The province’s Environment minister is clarifying some proposed changes to the Wildlife Habitat Protection Act.

Nancy Heppner confirms the province is looking at opening up certain regions of the province that are designated as protected.

She says the work was carried out by her own ministry, as well as Saskatchewan Agriculture through a scientific process.

According to Heppner, most of the land that is protected will stay untouched.

She also stresses that none of the province’s ecological reserves are under review — or any protected areas in the north.

The Opposition is blasting the move.

NDP critic Sandra Morin says the proposed changes would allow the government to sell off specific lands without public consultation.

Morin feels the government is also looking to sell off certain areas at “fire-sale” prices in order to turn a quick profit.
