A new art exhibit in Regina is highlighting the First Nations of the Qu’Appelle valley.
The MacKenzie Art Gallery is hosting “James Henderson: The Man Who Paints Old Men” from now until September 5th.
According to his biography, Henderson was born in Scotland and lived in the Qu’Appelle valley from 1916 to the late 1920s.
During this time, he painted pictures of the valley landscape and the First Nations people who lived there.
Dr. Neal McLeod is the co-curator and hails from the James Smith First Nation.
McLeod says many people in the audience at the recent opening reception are descendents of those in the paintings.
McLeod co-curated the exhibition with Dan Ring of the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon.
The MacKenzie is organizing a historical tour of the valley in June.
