The Ahtahkakoop First Nation wants to set up a methadone clinic for its residents on reserve.

Freda Ahenakew is the executive director of the Cree Nation Treatment Haven.

Ahenakew estimates as many as 30 people from their community hitchhike to Prince Albert on a daily routine to get their methadone.

She says having a facility on the First Nation would reduce a lot of the risks patients face when going out on the highway alone.

According to Ahenakew, most of them are on the road by 8:00 a.m. and don’t return to their home reserve until after dark.

Ahenakew says the band will be having a meeting with Health Canada in the second week of June to discuss the issue.
