Many Unknowns About Impact Of Forest Deal In Sask.

An official with one of the forest product companies that signed onto the Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement earlier this week says some details still need to be worked out when it comes to how it will impact Saskatchewan.

On Monday, 21 members of the Forest Products Association of Canada and nine environmental groups signed an agreement that will conserve significant areas of boreal forest in order to protect threatened woodland caribou.

Weyerhaeuser’s Canadian Public Affairs Manager, Wayne Roznowsky, notes there is a forest management agreement on the eastern side of the province that is now jointly owned by Weyerhaeuser and Edgewood, the company that bought the sawmill in Carrot River and plywood mill in Hudson Bay.

Roznowsky says it will take some time to figure out how that will work, since Edgewood is not one of the signatories of the new agreement — but he says Weyerhaeuser supports the deal.

He also says he is not aware of another agreement like it.
