A judge in Prince Albert has agreed to sentence a man to five years in jail for killing an elder on the Mistawasis reserve.

Justice Allison Rothery accepted a joint submission from the Crown and defence in the trial of Vincent Dreaver.

The 40-year-old Dreaver admitted in court this week he stabbed and killed 81-year-old Antoine Sand in August, 2007.

This morning, family members read their victim impact statements in court.

Some said they felt anger towards Dreaver, while Sand’s great granddaughter held up a photograph of the family to Dreaver, saying “This is what you’ve taken”.

Dreaver was given credit for serving two years and nine months in jail already.

The Crown is recommending Dreaver be given a full mental assessment, as well.
