The planning committee for this year’s Back to Batoche celebrations hopes to make the event about commemoration and reconciliation by calling on the descendents of all those who fought in the 1885 Northwest Resistance to attend a special ceremony during the July festivities.
Metis Nation – Saskatchewan President Robert Doucette says they are looking for descendents of anyone who fought in that conflict, on any side, so they can be commemorated during a reconciliation ceremony at the historic gravesite at the Batoche National Historic Site.
The Back to Batoche planning committee says its event this year will be one of the largest cultural celebrations in the province.
There will be other new items at this year’s celebration, including an Artisans’ Village, a Metis film festival and an attempt to break the Guinness world record for the largest wooden spoon ensemble — a record held by a group in the United Kingdom with 345 people.
