Pankiw Wins Latest Court Battle Over Pamphlets

The Federal Court has sided with former Saskatchewan MP Jim Pankiw over some controversial pamphlets that were mailed to his constituents during his time in office.
The householders were sent to his constituents in the federal riding of Saskatoon-Humboldt in 2002 and 2003.
The Canadian Human Rights Commission and a number of Saskatoon residents argued that the brochures contained discriminatory views about First Nations people, and were hoping the court would strike down a ruling last year by the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal that dismissed the complaint.
However, Federal Court Judge John A. O’Keefe agreed with the tribunal, which determined that the primary nature of householders was not to benefit the constituents, but to convey a Member of Parliament’s political views and to receive feedback.
