The Saskatoon Health Region unveiled its Aboriginal Health Strategy today.
The president of the Metis Nation – Saskatchewan says the strategy is an example of bringing people together to find solutions to health disparities.
The strategy includes a number of points, such as developing an Aboriginal Health Council, developing cultural helper positions within the region to incorporate spiritual and cultural needs within facilities, and eliminating racism with an anti-racism strategy.
MNS President Robert Doucette says back in the day, everyone, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal worked together, but he says somehow people got away from that, to the detriment of many.
As part of the strategy, the region is also going to look at ways to hire more Aboriginal people, which fits with its representative workforce strategy it announced yesterday.
