FSIN Set To Unveil Position On Duty To Consult

The FSIN is set to release its vision of duty to consult and accommodate laws and procedures later today or tomorrow.

The details aren’t clear yet, but a press release says parameters have been set — including the law, a model band council resolution, a unified declaration, a certificate of authorization, a notion of non-compliance and the constitutional procedure on consultation and accommodation.

FSIN Vice-Chief Lyle Whitefish says the bottom line is governments are obligated to consult with First Nations.

Whitefish says the government must recognize and respect these laws, which he says were developed because the chiefs-in assembly rejected the provincial government’s duty to consult framework he says was drafted unilaterally.
