A doubling in graduation rates for Aboriginal students is bringing a smile to the face of a Prince Albert educator.
Tom Sutherland of the Saskatchewan Rivers School Division says he is encouraged by a recent study which shows graduation rates have doubled in the last decade.
According to Sutherland, just 12 per cent of the graduating class of 2000 was Aboriginal.
However, last year that number was 29 per cent.
He says giving students more choice in timelines and where they take classes has helped boost the rate.
Sutherland says the number of Aboriginal graduates who should be completing high school is around 44 per cent, so they still have a ways to go.
