The embattled chief of the Poundmaker Cree Nation is calling a leadership dispute on his reserve an “internal matter” that the band will deal with.

A group of dissidents calling themselves the Band Custom Initiative say they removed Duane Antoine and his council from leadership earlier this week, and replaced them with others.

Antoine has had little to say about the situation, aside from issuing a press release stating he is still the chief.

However, he did offer an apology to the chiefs at the FSIN’s legislative assembly, saying “I’d like to apologize on my behalf and my band membership (about) what’s going on back home”.

Antoine says his term doesn’t expire until May 15th, 2012.
