A cabinet shuffle announced yesterday Premier Brad Wall sees Ken Cheveldayoff become the new Minister of First Nations and Metis Relations, Northern Affairs and the Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation.
Cheveldayoff takes over from Bill Hutchinson.
The head of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations says he is happy with Wall’s choice.
Chief Guy Lonechild says Chevaldayoff is a leader who he knows he can work with.
He says the move could also provide a fresh outlook on issues like the duty to consult.
Lonechild says adjustments to the gaming file are just some of the areas he will be looking to tackle with the new minister.
Opposition leader Dwain Lingenfelter is not as impressed with Cheveldayoff’s appointment.
Lingenfelter says he doesn’t think Hutchinson was doing a good job, and isn’t sure if Cheveldayoff will fare any better.
The NDP leader says there really needs to be a commitment from the government to the duty to consult, adding he is not sure if Wall knows what that means.
