PBCN Woman Threatens Legal Action Over Black Mould

A member of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation says she’s contemplating launching a class-action lawsuit over the discovery of black mould in her home.

Lillian Morin lives on a reserve west of Prince Albert.

Morin says her house was recently inspected by officials at the Prince Albert Grand Council, who confirmed the presence of black mould and possible health consequences.

The mother of two says she temporarily moved to Prince Albert because her children were sick — and one was even hospitalized — which she believes was caused the mould.

However, Morin says she was forced to move back because she couldn’t afford rent in the city.

She feels both her band and Indian Affairs have a legal and moral obligation to remedy her family’s living conditions.

The chief of the band says he’s doing the best he can to address the situation.

However, Chief Darrell McCallum says there are houses all over afflicted with black mould, and there just isn’t enough money to go around to fix all of them.

The chief adds it’s frustrating as a leader to not have the resources to address all the problems.

McCallum says much of the band’s funding for housing has remained frozen for 15 years.

He says the band wants to build two new gas stations, and some money from those ventures will be used for housing.
