Efforts to win compensation for former students of the Timber Bay Children’s Home could bear fruit as early as this fall.
Michael Swinwood, a lawyer for the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, says his group is currently tabulating data from the three groups that used to run the institution.
Swinwood says that includes the Central Mennonite Committee, the Northern Canada Evangelical Mission and the Brethren in Christ.
He says after all the information is sorted, an application will be made (likely in August) to have the school placed on the list of institutions included in Ottawa’s residential school settlement agreement.
Swinwood explains the federal government will get a chance to respond to the request, but he is still hopeful a ruling will be issued this fall.
He adds the newly-begun work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission won’t affect the Timber Bay case.
