Wildfire Shuts Down Northern Highway

A road in the province’s far north has been closed due to excessive smoke from a forest fire.

Saskatchewan Environment says the Passfield fire is burning on both sides of Highway 905, north of Points North Landing.

Spokeswoman Jeanette Krayetski says that road, commonly known as the Athabasca Seasonal Road, is fairly slow to travel on so the closure makes sense — because motorists wouldn’t be able to react quickly enough if the fire suddenly threatened passing vehicles.

She adds the road will be opened when it is deemed safe.
