Ten First Nations plan to gather in the Porcupine Plain Provincial Forest starting next week to practice their treaty rights to that land.

Chief Darin Poorman of the Kawacatoose First Nation is the leader of one of the bands that will be attending.

He emphasizes the occupation will be peaceful and not a blockade.

Poorman says they want to show their young people that they have a vested interest in that area.

He says for the past five years, his band has held similar cultural camps and says they are to assert their rights to lands and resources.

Poorman says the government is not doing a good enough job consulting and accommodating First Nations when it comes to resource development on their lands.
