A Saskatoon woman who was shot by police has been convicted of assault.

Earlier today, Leanne Severight was found guilty of assault for threatening officers, as well as carrying weapons dangerous to the public.

On December 27th, 2007, police responded to a 9-1-1 call and found Severight pacing a city street, waving knives and yelling “shoot me, shoot me.”

She was later shot and then charged with assault for threatening the officers.

The Crown argued the constable who shot her felt threatened and thought Severight would slash or stab her — while the defence contended that Severight posed no threat to anyone but herself.

Severight says she isn’t happy with the investigation into how much distance there was between her and the officer that shot her — but is glad she wasn’t put into remand after today’s verdict.

A pre-sentence report has been ordered by the defense, which will not say what sentence it would like.

The Crown will be requesting two years less a day to 30 months.

Sentencing will take place in September.
