Two new scholarships have been created to honour and support Aboriginal students affected by the legacy of residential schools.

Survivors of residential schools — and their descendants — can apply for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Scholarship.

Valued at $5,000 each, the awards will be presented annually to one male and one female student attending the University of Winnipeg.

University President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Lloyd Axworthy says the scholarship is way to reach out to the community through education — and hopes other educational institutions follow suit.

The scholarships are based on consultations with the Aboriginal community and residential school survivors.
