A lands and resources researcher with the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations says the lives of First Nations people will be greatly impacted if species that are at risk disappear.

Brian Scribe is presenting his work at the “Only A Matter of Time” environmental gathering this week at Wanuskewin.

Scribe says there needs to be more awareness about species that are at risk of disappearing — and he says First Nations may need to take the lead on that.

He says First Nations may need to look at developing their own regulations for protecting the species, because he says the government is currently not doing enough to protect their habitats when it comes to development.

Scribe says if species become extinct, it would be akin to removing certain foods from the shelves in a grocery store.
