Aboriginal Groups Pledge To Help North’s Disabled

An advocate for the disabled in northern Saskatchewan hopes signing a declaration today will lead to more services in the north for people like him.
Gary Tinker was joined by representatives from New North, the Metis Nation – Saskatchewan, Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nation, and Metis National Council to sign the “Declaration from the North”, which calls for cooperative efforts to ensure people with disabilities enjoy the same standard of living as others.
Tinker, who was born with cerebral palsy, says that wasn’t the case when he was growing up — and he says it still isn’t the case.
He says there is a lack of adequate transportation and housing for people living with disabilities.
Tinker also says even if a disabled person is educated, they may not get hired, which he says is discriminatory.
The Gary Tinker Federation will take the declaration around the North to be endorsed by communities in advance of next year’s Gary Tinker Disability Day on August 1st.
