The Grand Chief of the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs says in many ways, it is irrelevant who is the minister of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada.

Grand Chief Stewart Phillip says the new minister, John Duncan, has taken issue with Aboriginal rights in the past and believes more in individual rights, which is a concern.

But, Phillip says as long as the Conservative government continues to deny the constitutional rights of Aboriginal peoples, it doesn’t matter who is the minister, because the minister will just toe the party line.

Phillip doesn’t think much would change under another political party either.

He says a positive may be the fact that Duncan is from British Columbia and has knowledge of the issues.
