National Water Keepers Conference A Possibility

A national Keepers of the Water gathering may be on the horizon, Prince Albert Grand Council Vice-Chief Don Deranger says.

Deranger helped organize the fourth Keepers of the Water Gathering, held last weekend at the Hatchet First Nation, near Wollaston Lake.

The first gathering was organized in Fort Simpson in 2006.

In 2007, it was held in B.C., followed by Alberta and then Saskatchewan.

Next year it will be held in Manitoba.

Eventually, it will go right across the country, to Newfoundland, Deranger says.

He says once that happens, a national conference may be organized.

Deranger says that gathering would likely include not only First Nations and Metis, but also Inuit, and anyone else who’s interested.
