Tantoo Cardinal Named To Order Of Canada

Thirty-nine more people have been named to the Governor General’s Order of Canada as members and officers.

One of them is actor Tantoo Cardinal who has made appearances in films such as “Dances with Wolves” and “Legends of the Fall”, as well as the television show “North of 60”.

She was also one of the founding members of the Saskatchewan Native Theatre Company.

Saskatchewan author Sandra Birdsell was also named to the Order.

She has written books that provide insight into Metis culture.

As well, John Godel, an Alberta doctor known for his research on insolated northern populations has also been recognized.

He spent 20 years travelling through northern Canada to provide healthcare to Aboriginal children.
