Keewatin Yatthe CEO Richard Petit says health care workers belonging to SGEU have signed a new contract.

The deal, for 2,000 health care workers across the province, provides a 9.5 percent wage increase over four years.

The agreement was announced by the union on Friday.

Petit says they’ve been without a contract for about two years.

He says it could have been a disaster for the health region if those employees had gone on strike for a new contract.

Petit says about 200 of the approximately 300 workers in the Keewatin Yatthe belong to the SGEU.

They work in housekeeping, dietary and clerical occupations.
