Province Asked To Enter Talks Over Boarding School

The Saskatchewan government is being asked to help settle compensation claims filed by survivors of the Ile a la Crosse boarding school.

Metis National Council President Clem Chartier says he spoke to Premier Brad Wall recently at a summit in Manitoba.

Chartier has fought for years to have Ottawa make former students of the boarding school eligible for compensation.

However, he says that request hasn’t gone anywhere, and he’s hoping the province can help settle the impasse.

Chartier says he also knows Prime Minister Stephen Harper has written a letter to Wall seeking ways to resolve this issue.

A deputy minister with the provincial government confirms the request has been made for tripartite talks between the province, the Metis and Ottawa.

However, Darren McKee says the province hasn’t decided yet what it will do.
