Community Feedback Prompts Change In Mine Cleanup

The Saskatchewan Research Council says it will not be burning any buildings at the abandoned Gunnar mine site.

Council spokesman Joe Muldoon says the decision was made following a mailout to residents in the Athabasca Basin.

Some residents voiced their objections to the idea, fearing harmful material from the smoke and fire could drift into Uranium City.

Muldoon says that feedback was a key reason in the decision.

He says demolition crews have been at the mine site for the last week-and-a-half, and demolition work is underway.

Muldoon advises people to stay away from the site due to the hazards posed by construction equipment.
