A University of Saskatchewan researcher is setting out to study the Mi’kmaq people and eventually incorporate their belief systems into curricula here.
Marie Battiste, a Mi’kmaq herself, was recently awarded a grant for a three-year study into the humanities of the Mi’kmaq.
Battiste says it will investigate teachings, spirituality, oral traditions and arts of the Indigenous group, and then look at ways of incorporating those into high school and post-secondary curricula.
She says humanities such as literature, music, fine arts, history and philosophy typically often use only Western examples and need to be more inclusive.
Battiste says Mi’kmaq teachings, such as living a good life or living in relationship with others, can easily be applied to everyone — not just Indigenous people.
