The new commander of the RCMP in Saskatchewan says he’s looking forward to his new job.
Russell Mirasty of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band says he never could have imagined that when he put on his uniform 32 years ago, he would wind up as the province’s assistant commissioner.
Mirasty’s appointment was learned yesterday.
He currently is stationed in Ottawa serving as a chief superintendent.
Before that he was the district commander for the RCMP in Northern Saskatchewan.
He says he didn’t foresee the promotion.
Mirasty adds he knows Saskatchewan from top to bottom and knows what it’s like to be a First Nations person in the province.
He says open communications and a willingness to sit down and talk about the issues will help build relationships between the RCMP and the aboriginal community.
Mirasty isn’t sure when his first day on the job will be.
