A group of people from the Cumberland House area have received support in their attempts at being recognized as the John Cochrane First Nation.

Chief John Dorion says the Indigenous Nations Treaties 1 – 11 national gathering in Regina earlier this month passed a resolution in support of his group.

Dorion says it is an important step, because “we finally got some backing — we’re no longer alone”.

He adds “it’s a pretty big endorsement” for his band, and hopes to use it to pressure the federal government to officially recognize his band.

Dorion says his group is part of Treaty 5, but Indian Affairs has not responded to submissions made in 2006 and 2008.
