First Nations Education Grants Not In Danger: FSIN

The future of the Post-Secondary Student Support Program appears to be in less jeopardy than recently feared.
Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations Chief Guy Lonechild says he no longer believes Ottawa is interested in scrapping the program in favour of repayable loans.
For the last few years, First Nations have openly said they worried Ottawa wants to phase out grants for First Nations university studies in favour of loans.
However, Lonechild says he recently met with Indian Affairs officials and that doesn’t appear to be the case.
He told delegates at yesterday’s session of the FSIN fall legislative assembly that he believes recent rallies have caused the government to lose interest in the idea.
Lonechild also said he believes INAC’s attention is shifting to K – 12 education instead.
