The closing arguments in a Metis election forgery trial are in.
Brian Amyotte is facing four forgery-related charges for his involvement in the controversial 2004 Metis Nation – Saskatchewan election.
The lawyer for Amyotte spoke first, saying incorrect signatures at the Denholm poll were an honest mistake and not meant to trick anyone.
The Crown argued it isn’t an honest mistake if you forge someone else’s name or instruct someone to do so.
The defence also cautioned the jury on how much weight to give some of the Crown witnesses’ testimony, noting Albert Delaire is facing serious criminal charges for allegedly defrauding the Metis Addictions Council of Saskatchewan.
Amyotte’s lawyer also called Cheryl Gervais a bitter woman who says everyone is guilty.
Crown prosecutor Paul Goldstein asked the jury to consider Amyotte’s demeanor when he was cross-examined and asked if he felt shame for his actions.
Goldstein noted, in response, Amyotte pointed at him and said: “You stay out of our business”.
The jury begins deliberating tomorrow.
