For the first time in Canada, a provincial government is providing funding for affordable housing on a reserve.
The Saskatchewan government has invested $1.7 million into a 12-unit affordable housing unit on the whitecap Dakota First Nation.
Whitecap is providing $744,000.
Whitecap Chief Darcy Bear says these units will go toward bringing people back home to the reserve.
Bear says his band decided to pursue affordable housing because many people who commute to the reserve for work say they would like to reside in Whitecap.
The housing project is expected to be completed next fall.
