The winner of the Meadow Lake Tribal Council SGI Seatbelt Challenge is the Island Lake First Nation.

SGI spokesperson Kelley Brinkworth says seatbelt use in that community more than doubled to 96%.

Island Lake will now receive up to $50,000 worth of traffic safety improvements on the reserve from SGI.

Six MLTC communities competed to see who could increase seatbelt use the most — Island Lake, Flying Dust, Buffalo River, Canoe Lake, English River and Birch Narrows.

The competition ran from early spring until the fall.

The first runner-up was the Flying Dust First Nation, which saw its seatbelt use increase by 79%.
