Fishers’ Payments Equivalent to Four Years Ago

A long-time fisherman from the east side says final payments for fishers this year are about the same as four or five years ago.
Last week, the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation released statistics on its final payments to fishers in the province.
The total came in at around $119,000.
The payment is a stark difference from last year when fishers received NO final payment at all.
However, John Carriere of Cumberland House says he’s still disappointed in the amount.
Carriere says right now fishers are looking for peddlers in the province to sell to.
However, he cautions this practise comes at the same time fishers are hoping to get a license of their own to sell product outside the province.
Carriere says he doubts the province will step forward with any funding for a proposed fish-processing plant in Prince Albert.
He notes the government has had 11 years to help fund the project, and hasn’t done anything so far.
