The coroner’s inquest into the death of a 19-year-old man from Canoe Lake Cree Nation has concluded in Meadow Lake.
The six-member jury ruled that the freezing death was accidental.
In January 2009, Kyle Lariviere died of exposure after escaping RCMP custody.
His frozen body was found outside Beauval on a snowmobile trail.
RCMP Constable Mitch Perry admitted he made several mistakes and issued an apology to the family.
The jury also made several recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
They include a need to modify the back doors of RCMP cruisers so they lock automatically when the vehicle is in park.
There was also a suggestion to maintain current RCMP staffing levels at Canoe Lake and Beauval and to put bars or mesh on the rear windows of cruisers.
Jurors also called for better tracking of RCMP equipment and that detachment members review the policy and procedure manual at least twice a year.
