A judge wants more time to consider what sentence is appropriate for a Stony Rapids man convicted of causing a fatal accident in La Ronge.

This morning, the crown and defense presented their submissions during the sentencing hearing for Wilbert Mercredi.

The 30-year-old man was convicted of impaired driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death in the crash that killed Larry Urquhart back in 2008.

The crown is asking for a sentence of four to five years in a federal penitentiary while the defense has requested two years less a day in a provincial jail.

Court heard that Mercredi breached the conditions of his release in May by consuming alcohol.

However, court also heard some comments in a pre-sentence report by Urquhart’s widow.

In it she called for the rehabilitation of Mercredi saying nothing could be done to bring back her husband, but if there was anything the accused could do to better himself she would like to see that.

The judge will render his decision on January 6th.
