Crown Asking For Prison Time In TLE Fraud Case

A big question will hang in the air this Christmas season for two former Mosquito First Nation TLE trustees.

Will they go to a federal jail for TLE fraud, or be able to serve their time in the community?

Sixty-eight-year-old Alphonse Peter Moosomin and 54-year-old Eldon Edward Starchief will find out December 30th.

North Battleford Provincial Court Judge Violet Meekma says that is the day she will hand down her sentence.

Moosomin and Starchief pleaded guilty to TLE fraud earlier this year.

They each admitted accepting more than $100,000 in 2002 meant for buying TLE land.

Crown Prosecutor Robin Ritter said Moosomin and Starchief should both serve a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence.

Defence lawyers said they should be sentenced to two years less a day, doing work for the community.
