Members of the Saskatchewan First Nations Veterans Association are busy locating the unmarked graves of their fellow soldiers.

The goal is to find where they are buried, access their records and erect permanent grave markers.

Inspections have now been done on a number of reserve graveyards in the North Battleford and Saskatoon areas.

Association executive member Ray Sanderson says his group will eventually contact veterans families on all First Nations in the province.

However, he says finding veterans’ families is turning out to be a huge task, because dead veterans have very few family members still living on reserves.

Sanderson says they will also need to obtain permission to access military records from the veterans’ descendants.
