A grassroots organization made up of volunteers that helps the families of missing and murdered Aboriginal women in Saskatchewan hopes the $10 million the federal government has earmarked for the issue will reach groups like theirs.
Last night in Saskatoon, Iskwewuk E-wichiwitochik gathered to discuss where people would hope the funding would go and how people could best lobby the government.
Spokesperson Myrna LaPlante says the volunteers do a lot of good work and are called upon often for their help, which includes helping families of missing women with fundraising and financial support for awareness campaigns and searches.
LaPlante says it makes the most sense to fund grassroots organizations because they know the people and have developed relationships with them.
She notes the group is working with Karina Wolfe’s family.
Wolfe has been missing from Saskatoon since July.
