Woman’s Dogs Shot By Northern Dog Catcher

A northern Saskatchewan village’s approach to controlling stray dogs is under the microscope following a recent incident in the community.
A woman says the local dog catcher shot her three dogs during a visit to Buffalo Narrows — even though her pets were wearing collars and name tags.
Nadia Persaud says she was visiting friends when she let the dogs out into a fenced area, but they weren’t there when she checked on them later.
She was eventually told by a Mountie that the community’s dog catcher had been shooting strays that day.
Persaud says her dogs had bullet wounds in their heads when she found their bodies under some garbage at the local landfill.
Buffalo Narrows Mayor Bobby Woods says it was an unfortunate incident, but something has to be done about the stray dog problem.
Woods says his community is doing what it can to protect citizens from strays, noting his municipality doesn’t have the resources and finances to duplicate what’s in place in southern communities.
He says stray dogs have killed and injured children in the area, but there could be changes in the near future.
Woods says it is possible some kind of dog pound could be set up in Buffalo Narrows in the New Year.
