A new report by the Conference Board of Canada suggests that mining will be the main industry for northern Saskatchewan in the years to come.

The study also identifies oil and gas, forestry, fishing, utilities, construction and tourism as important segments of the economy.

While the report concludes mining has the brightest future, forestry and fishing are not expected to see much growth.

The conference board’s director of energy and environment, Len Coad, says hosting tourists from Europe and Japan is an opportunity for Aboriginal people.

Coad says it will be important to provide a high-quality experience for visitors to the north.

However, he says limited airports, hotels and year-round services could hold back the tourism industry.
